  1. Hello everyone - 
  2. Here it is, the next version of MSYS.  Read the WHATSNEW.109
  3. file for a changes between 1.08 and 1.09.  Note that the main
  4. documentation file remains unchanged from 1.08. I was unable to
  5. get my BBSLIST.DAT file to fit on the disk, so I will no longer
  6. be distributing it on the MSYS distribution disk.  I have
  7. included my BBSTONTS.DAT file. A program is also included in the
  8. WHATSNEW.109 file to reconstruct a BBSLIST.DAT file from my
  9. BBSTONTS.DAT file (qth and zip codes for stations will not be
  10. recreated). If you really want my BBSLIST.DAT file it will be
  11. available via mail for the same prices as the MSYS distribution
  12. disk.

  14.         I am working on the MSYS book. Its taking a lot more
  15. time than I first imagined. I will advise when it is ready. DRSI
  16. board support: Good news and bad news. The good news is support
  17. for it is included in this version of MSYS.  Bad news is that it
  18. requires two external routines (a device driver and a TSR
  19. program that are not currently provided, about 30K total).
  20. Performance is improving but all the bugs haven't been worked
  21. out yet. Again, when its ready I will let you know all about it.

  23.         @MSYS route: Things seem to have settled down. Please DO
  24. NOT USE IT! I have no objections to anyone setting up other
  25. routes that you may desire for any purposes. I would suggest
  26. consideration of starting up voice net(s) on HF for rapid
  27. exchange of information/questions.

  29.         Automatic message holding: Not included in the docs is the
  30. TITLE= parameter that you can also include in your specifications. 
  31. If used, this should be the last parameter on the line. If the value
  32. given for TITLE= is found any where in the title of a message (and
  33. all other specifications are met) the message will be held.

  35.         Future plans: compacting the code (an ongoing effort),
  36. improving the various protocol implementations and possibly an
  37. attempt at modularization so you can leave out major parts you
  38. don't want (BBS, TCP/IP, and/or network nodes) so as to free up
  39. memory (this may be a few releases down the line - I've been
  40. playing with Borland's C++ and it has some interesting
  41. posibilities but MSYS doesn't run when compiled with it).  Looks
  42. like I may also be including support for the Buckmaster CD ROM
  43. callbook disk.  Next major version is planned for release around
  44. the beginning of the year.

  46. HERE IS SOMETHING REALLY IMPORTANT: When you order disks from me,
  47. be sure to tell me what version you now have. Otherwise I may send
  48. you something you already have. And also be sure to include your
  49. CALLSIGN as this is how I maintain my records. Also give me your
  50. full name and address.

  52. Due to the logistics of storage, if you send me a disk, mailer and
  53. return postage, I will only provide the current release. I will not
  54. be able to store them for future releases.

  56. If you have problems getting MSYS going here are some things to
  57. try that have helped many who have called:
  58.         1. Make sure you have FILES=20 and BUFFERS=20 in CONFIG.SYS
  59.         2. Try adding STACKS=0,0 to CONFIG.SYS
  60.         3. Get rid of anything resident (check AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS)
  61.         4. Run MUTIL 4 (do this every time you start MSYS)
  62.         5. Simplify MSYS.OPT as much as possible; remove all PORT statements
  63.         6. Delete your MSYS.DO file (after making a backup!)
  64. These items should get you to the point where MSYS will work. From here
  65. try putting things back and see what causes failure.
